Yes. Washington has enforced the 2023 National Electrical Code since April 1, 2024, and it requires GFCI protection for receptacles in a home's bathroom areas. Washington adds its own rule: fixed electrical equipment with exposed grounded metal parts inside an enclosed shower, or within five feet of a bathtub's top inside edge, must also be GFCI protected.

Washington's plumbing code requires at least 15 inches from a toilet's center to any side wall or obstruction, and 30 inches center to center from a similar fixture, like a bidet. In a home, the clear space in front of the toilet must be at least 21 inches. Grab bars and paper dispensers don't count as obstructions.

Washington's plumbing code requires a shower compartment to have at least 900 square inches of finished interior area and room for a 30-inch circle, kept clear up to 70 inches above the drain. Only valves, the showerhead, soap dishes, shelves and grab bars may protrude. A shower receptor at least 30 inches wide and 60 inches long is exempt.

A universal design bathroom, built for accessibility, did better at 59.2%. Weigh everyday use alongside resale.

In unincorporated Snohomish County, yes if the remodel touches the pipes: any work on the water supply or drainage system needs a permit, with every fixture listed. Like-for-like fixture swaps, tiling and cabinets are exempt. Owners may do their own plumbing under a Residential Plumbing Permit, and new drains must pass a water test before walls are covered.
